08/01/2010

Bulbophyllum pteroglossum Schltr. 1919 (Bulbophyllum monanthum), is an epiphytic growing miniature orchid species, native to Bhutan, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand, South China and Vietnam.

The beautiful, but scentless flowers reach a size of just 0,5 - 1 cm and are best viewed with a magnifying glass or a macro lens. The single flowered inflorescences get lengths of about 1 cm. Flowering period: Autumn - Winter. The natural environment of the miniature orchid are forests at elevations of 1000 to 2500 meters. Bulbophyllum pteroglossum orchids, better known as Bulbophyllum monanthum (Kze) J.J. Sm. 1912, which is just accepted as a synonym by the science of botany, are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). The miniature orchid requires a cool to warm, humid climate, a shady location and moderate light.
