Bulbophyllum sanguineopunctatum Seidenf. & Kerr 1973

12/10/2010

Bulbophyllum sanguineopunctatum Seidenf. & Kerr 1973 is an epiphytic growing orchid species, native to Myanmar (formerly Burma), Laos and Thailand. The strange-looking, tropical orchid has been switched from the not longer supported genus Cirrhopetalum to the genus Bulbophyllum. The name Cirrhopetalum sanguineopunctatum seems not even accepted as a synonym by the science of botany. The spectacular, red doted flowers get lengths of about 8 cm. Flowering period: September - October.

Bulbophyllum sanguineopunctatum orchifs are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). The oriental orchid requires intermediate to warm temperatures, a location in full shade, a well drained potting medium and a good air circulation to avoid fungal infections. Plants should be kept humid, but not sogging wet, during growth season. Waterings should be restricted during winter rest.
