Heliconia Pedro Ortiz is considered as a natural hybrid, a crossing between Heliconia bourgeana and Heliconia collinsiana.

Heliconia Pedro Ortiz starts to grow erect flower bracts (upper picture) , like Heliconia bourgeana, but after a while the flower bracts swirl and become pendant (lower picture), as Heliconia collinsiana. The rhizomatous, tropical plant, belonging to the Zingiberales order, can reach heights of up to 3 meters. Flowering period in the tropics: all year round . The natural Heliconia hybrid, with its large leaves and stunning, long-lasting red flower bracts, has been named in honour to the Colombian botanist Father Pedro Ortiz Valdivieso (1926—2012). Heliconia Pedro Ortiz requires a warm to hot, humid climate and is best cultivated in full sun - partial shade. The Heliconia plant isn`t hardy and doesn`t tolarate temperatures below 4° C. Heliconias as cut-flowers last up to about one month and are well-liked for exotic flower decorations and bouquets.
