Primarily Liparis latifolia Lindl. 1830 has been classified by the German-Dutch botanist
Karl Ludwig Blume as Malaxis latifolia Blume 1825. Sir John Lindley changed the name in Liparis latifolia Lindl. 1830, which is principally used. Some sources claim Stichorkis latifolia (Lindl.) Pfitzer 1897 is the correct name, but is mostly just accepted as a synonym. Liparis latifolia is a terrestrial growing orchid species, native to China (Hainan), Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and New Guinea. The erect to arching inflorescences reach lengths of up to about 30 cm and are densely packed with flesh-colored, exotic flowers. The slightly fragrant flowers get a size of about 2 cm in diameter. Flowering period: Spring - Summer.
Liparis latifolia orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). The tropical ground orchid orchid requires intermediate to warm temperatures and a location in partial shade. Avoid direct sun, as the leaves get burned easily. Plants should be kept moist, but not sogging wet, during the growth season, whilst during the winter rest waterings
should be decreased.
