Cymbidium aloifolium

Cymbidium aloifolium (L.) Sw. 1799 is a terrestrial or lithophytic growing orchid species, widely distributed in Asian countries. Cymbidium aloifolium orchids are native to South China, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. The large sized orchid sprouts inflorescences with a length up to 75 cm, which can carry up to 45 flowers. Cymbidium aloifolium flowers get a size of about 4 cm. Flowering period: March – May. Cymbidium aloifolium was the first Cymbidium orchid known in Europe and has primarily been described by the great botanist Carl Linnaeus (1707 –1778), the father of modern taxonomy, as Epidendrum aloifolium in 1753. In 1799 the plant has been transfered to the genus Cymbidium by the Swedish botanist Olof Peter Swartz (1760-1818).
