Dendrobium finisterrae Schltr. 1912, commonly called End of the World Orchid (finisterrae), is an epiphytic growing orchid species, native to the world’s second largest island New Guinea (Papua Island).

The strange name of this tropical orchid doesn`t refer to the day of doom, it refers to the Finisterrae range, a mountain range in north-eastern Papua New Guinea. The natural environment of Dendrobium finisterrae orchids are moist forests at elevations from 1300 - 2100 meters. The slighly fragrant flowers of the End of the World orchid get a size of about 6 cm and do not open well. Inflorescences get a length of about 25 cm and carry up to about 10 flowers. Flowering period: Winter - Summer. Dendrobium finisterrae belongs to the Dendrobium Section Latouria and requires a cool, misty climate and moderate light. Plants should be kept moist, but not soggy, during the growth season, water and fertilizer should be restricted during the winter rest, until new growth appears. Dendrobium finisterrae orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival).
