19/05/2010

Bulbophyllum bicolor Lindl. 1830 is an epiphytic, occasionally also lithophytic growing miniature orchid species, native to China (Yunnan), India (Sikkim), Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Thailand.

Flowers are born in umbels on short, about 4 cm long, inflorescences. Single flowers get a width of just about 2 cm. Flowering period: Spring - Summer. Bulbophyllum bicolor (synonym: Cirrhopetalum bicolor (Lindl.) Rolfe 1903) belongs to the Bulbophyllum Section Cirrhopetalum and is protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). The colorful orchid requires cold to warm temperatures, a shady location and a good air movement to avoid fungal infections. The tropical miniature orchid should be kept moist, but not wet, throughout the year.
