Thai Miniature Orchids not Scary Monsters Trias intermedia

22/03/2010

The Thai miniature orchids Trias intermedia Seidenf. & Smitin. 1961
are for sure not scary monsters, even if our young flower photographer Nat made them look like scary Thai monsters, which will snap with their canines any second.
It´s just a matter of the angle.

Trias intermedia Seidenf. & Smitin. 1961 is an epiphytic growing miniature orchid, found only in Thailand. The flowers reach a size of just about 0.8 cm. Flowering period: March - July. Trias intermedia orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). The tropical orchid requires intermediate - warm temperatures, a shady location and should be kept always moist, but not wet. Like the related Bulbophyllum orchids, Trias orchids need a good air movement to avoid fungal infection. During the winter rest waterings should be slightly restricted.

At the second image, our 2 “scary monsters” look more like young birds waiting on food. Just a matter of the angle. Photographer Nat used a Canon 400 D EOS Digital Rebel and a Canon Macro Lens EF 100 mm/ 2.8 Macro USM. The shots has been done outside in our garden, using daylight. The background has been coverd with a velvety, non reflective fabric.
