Hoya cumingiana Decaisne 1844

10/05/2010

Hoya cumingiana Decne. 1844 was classified by the French botanist Joseph Decaisne (1807 – 1882) and named in honour to “the Prince of Collectors” Hugh Cuming (1791 - 1865), an English naturalist and conchologist, who discovered the tropical plant at the island of Mindoro during his expedition to the Philippines from 1836 until 1839.

The beautiful Hoya species is widley spread all over the Philippine islands. Hoya cumingiana isn´t growing like a winder, as many other Hoyas, it grows scrubby. The plant likes limestone, so it is advisable to put a broken shell or gypsum in the plant pot. Flowers are grouped in hanging umbels of up to about 15-20 single flowers, which are highly fragrant with a scent of citrus and musk and last about 1 week.
