Water Snowflake (Nymphoides indica)

11/02/2010

The name water snowflake for the beautiful Nymphoides indica (L.) Kuntze hits the nail right on the head. The flowers of the Nymphoides indica are really looking like snowflakes on the water. The aquatic plant, which is not related to water lilies (Nymphaea), even if the leaves look quite similar, is endemic to Middle- and South America. Nowadays Nymphoides indica is also widely spread all over Asia. In Nicaragua parts of water snowflake plants are used as a natural medicine against stomach upset.
