Bulbophyllum lindleyanum Griff. 1851 Mini Orchid

22/01/2010

Bulbophyllum lindleyanum, commonly called Lindley´s Bulbophyllum, is an epiphytic growing mini orchid species, native to Thailand, Myanmar (formerly Burma) and India.

The Bulbophyllum lindleyanum Griff. 1851 miniature orchid has been named by William Griffith in honour of the renowned British botanist John Lindley. Flowers of this beautiful, but strange tropical orchid get a size of just 0,5 cm and are best viewed with a magnifying glass or a macro lens. Inflorescences reach lengths up to about 20 cm and carry up to about 15 small flowers. Flowering period: January. Bulbophyllum lindleyanum orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). The exotic orchid requires cool to warm temperatures, a shady location and good air movement to avoid root rot. During the growth season the plant should be kept moist, but not wet. The potting medium shouldn`t dry out, whilst during the winter rest waterings should be restricted.
