Bulbophyllum purpurascens Teijsm. & Binn 1862 is an epiphytic growing miniature orchid species, native to Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand and the tropical islands Borneo,
Java and Sumatra.


The erect inflorescences get lengths up to about 20 cm and carry up to 20 single flowers. Flowers of Bulbophyllum purpurascens reach a size of just about 1,5 cm in diameter. Flowering period: from Spring to Autumn. Bulbophyllum purpurascens orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). The tropical miniature orchid requires intermediate – hot temperatures, a location in deep shade and a good air movement to avoid fungal infections.
Plants should be kept humid, but not wet.
The name purpurascens refers to the leaves.
