Bulbophyllum siamense Rchb.f.

28/12/2009

There is quite a bit of confusion about the beautiful Bulbophyllum siamense
Rchb.f. 1867.

Some sources claim that it´s not the correct botanical name for the tropical orchid, they call it Bulbophyllum lobbii Lindl. 1847. Others say the Bulbophyllum lobbii is a bit similar, but at least different to the Bulbophyllum siamense Rchb.f. 1867. We saw both and we can confirm, that the 2 species are at least different in shape.
Bulbophyllum siamense Rchb.f. is native to India (Assam), Myanmar (formerly Burma), Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia. The fragrant flowers get a size of about 5 cm. Flowering period: May - July. Bulbophyllum siamense orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival).
