Cattleya granulosa Lindl. 1842

06/12/2012

Cattleya granulosa Lindl. 1842 is an epiphytic growing orchid species, native to Brazil and is easily confused with Cattleya schofieldiana Rchb. f. 1882.

While flowers of both Cattleya species orchids look quite similar, Cattleya schofieldiana has a much more dentate lip with knobbly excesses and the plant can reach heights of about 75 cm, while Cattleya granulosa plants get a height of about 40 cm. Flowers of both species can vary in colors as well. The fragrant and long-living Cattleya granulosa flowers reach a size of about 15 cm (same as Cattleya schofieldiana). Flowering period: Spring - Summer. The tropical orchid requires a warm to hot humid climate and partial shade - full sun. During the winter rest the orchid should be kept cooler and watering should be restricted. Cattleya granulosa orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival).
