We found this Cymbidium insigne Rolfe 1904 orchid a few days ago at the Chiang Mai Flower Festival, which take place every year on the first weekend in February. We went to a small shop and the very friendly salesman showed us three absolutely different Cymbidium orchids, all 3 labeled as Cymbidium insigne. We chatted a while and he claimed, that the 3 plants are from different countries of origin and they are all Cymbidium insigne species orchids. He confused us a lot and while we`ve been back home we had a look in the internet, where we found even more different Cymbidium insigne orchids. The terrestrially growing Cymbidium insigne orchid is native to Thailand, Vietnam and South China (Hainan). The erect inflorescences reach a length up to 1,50 meter and can carry up to about 25 non-fragrant flowers. Flowers get a size of 5-9 cm. Flowering period: Winter - Spring. Cymbidium insigne orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival).
