Miniature Orchid Epigeneium nakaharaei

30/12/2012

Epigeneium nakaharaei (Schltr.) Summerh. 1957 is an epiphytic growing miniature orchid species, native to Taiwan.

Flowers get a size of about 2,5 cm. Flowering period: Autumn - Winter. The miniature orchid has been primarily described by the German botanist Rudolf Schlechter (1872-1925) in the year 1906 as Dendrobium nakaharaei. Both names are misspelled, the correct spelling would be “nakaharae”, but the misspelled name Epigeneium nakaharaei has been accepted by the science of botany. The miniature orchid, with a creeping growth habit is best mounted on wood and requires intermediate temperatures and light. Watering should be restricted during the winter rest, until new growth appears. Epigeneium nakaharaei orchids are considered as easy to grow and are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival).
