Orchid Hybrid Bulbophyllum Meen Garuda

12/09/2012

Bulbophyllum Meen Garuda is an epiphytic growing, primary orchid hybrid, a crossing between the sprcies orchids Bulbophyllum lasiochilum (seed parent) and Bulbophyllum echinolabium (pollen parent).

The orchid hybrid has been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in the year 2005 by Meen Nursery, a Thai orchid nursery specialised on Bulbophyllum hybrids. The nursery is located in Nonthaburi, a Thai city about 20 km north of Bangkok. Bulbophyllum orchids, with their often quite strange appearance have been undervalued in the past and so the first Bulbophyllum hybrid, Bulbophyllum Louis Sander (Bulb. longissimum x Bulb. ornatissimum) , has been created not until 1936. The dark maroon colored flowers of the orchid hybrid Bulbophyllum Meen Garuda get a size of about 6 cm. Bulbophyllum Meen Garuda is free flowering, means the hybrid has no specific flowering period. The tropical orchid hybrid requires a warm to hot and humid climate and is best cultivated in partial shade.

The Garuda is a mythical bird, appearing in the mythology of Hinduism and Buddhism as well. The mythical creature, half bird, half human, symbolizes force, speed and martials skills. In our home country Thailand the Garuda is called Krut and is the national emblem of Thailand as well as the personal emblem of His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great,
King of Thailand.
