25/07/2010

Pelatantheria bicuspidata (Rolfe ex Downie) Tang & F.T. Wangis 1951 an epiphytic, occasionally also lithophytic, growing miniature orchid species, native to China, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.

The cute, but very small flowers get a size of just about 0,7cm in diameter and are best viewed with a magnifying glass or a macro lens. Flowering period: July. Pelatantheria bicuspidata is easily confused with Pelatantheria ctenoglossum Ridl. 1896, which has a bit bigger flowers (1,2 cm) and hairs on the apical finger of the lip.
Pelatantheria bicuspidata orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). The tropical miniature orchid requires a warm, humid climate and a location in partial shade with moderate sunlight.
