Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica (Rchb. f.) H.R. Sweet 1969 is an epiphytic growing orchid species, native to the Philippines, where it has been found in the late 19. century on the islands of Palawan and Polillo by the plant collector William Boxall (1844 - 1910).

The name refers to the markings at the sepals and petals, which are reminescent of hieroglyphs. Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica requires a warm to hot humid climate and low light. The remarkable tropical plant is considered as an easy to grow orchid and can be recommended for orchid beginners. The stunning flowers open simultaneously and last for about 2-3 month. Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica flowers get a size of nearly 9 cm across. The orchid is known as a vigorous grower and mature, big plants can flourish more than 50 flowers. Flowering period: late Spring - Summer. Inflorescences reach a length up to 30 cm and should not be cut away, while still green, as they can reflower in the following years. Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival).
