Pomatocalpa spicatum (Pomatocalpa spicata)

Pomatocalpa spicatum Breda 1827 (Pomatocalpa spicata) is a small sized, epiphytic growing orchid species, native to Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, India (Assam, Sikkim), Bhutan, South China and the Himalayas.

The very small, yellow flowers with red spots get a size of just 0,5 cm and are best viewed with a magnifying glass or a macro lens. Pomatocalpa spicatum flowers are also found without red spots. Flowering period: February - March. The small orchid is often named Pomatocalpa spicata, which is, in our opinion, grammatically correct, but not accepted by the science of botany. Pomatocalpa spicatum (Pomatocalpa spicata) orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). The small, tropical orchid requires warm – hot temperatures and is best cultivated in partial shade.
