17/10/2012

Bulbophyllum macrocoleum Seidenf. 1979 is an epiphytic or lithophytic growing orchid species, native to Thailand and Vietnam. Inflorescences of Bulbophyllum macrocoleum get a length up to about 15 cm and are packed with tiny little, bizarre flowers.

The slightly fragrant, single flowers get a size of just about 0,5 cm and are best viewed with a magnifying glass or a macro lens.
Flowering period: November. Bulbophyllum macrocoleum orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). The tropical orchid species requires a warm - hot, humid climate and is best cultivated in hanging baskets or mounted on wood.
