Clerodendrum quadriloculare (Blanco) Merr. 1905, commonly called Winter Starburst, Fireworks or Shooting Star in Thailand called Sao San Sai, is a small tree or large shrub, native to the Philippines.
The Winter Starburst shrub, belongs to the Verbena family (Verbenaceae) and reaches heights up to about 5-6 meters The spectacular flowers forming balls with up to 25 cm in diameter. Flowering period: Winter - Spring. The tropical bush is best cultivated in full sun to partial shade and is considered as easy to care. Established plants are very drought resistant. Like most Clerodendrum plants, the Winter Starburst produces lots of root suckers, which should be removed immediately. Once the root suckers are established they`re difficult to remove by hand and have to be dug out.
