Lady Slipper Orchid Paphiopedilum Schaetzchen
18/08/2012
Paphiopedilum Schaetzchen is a lady slipper orchid hybrid, a crossing between Paphiopedilum Maudiae (Paphiopedilum callosum x Paphiopedilum lawrenceanum) (seed parent) and Paphiopedilum charlesworthii (pollen parent).
The terrestrial growing Paphiopedilum Schaetzchen has been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in the year 1974 by Adolf Röhl (1910-1990), the founder of the German orchid nursery Orchideen Röhl in Soest. The lady slipper orchid hybrid requires an intermediate temperature, moderate bright light and regularly watering. During the growth period the potting medium should always be moist, but not soggy to avoid root rot. To induce blooming watering should be restricted during the winter rest. Paphiopedilum Schaetzchen flowers get a size of about 8 cm. Flowering period: Summer. Paphiopedilum Schaetzchen is easily confused with Paphiopedilum Rosita, which has nearly the same parentage, but without Paphiopedilum lawrenceanum. The main difference is the headmost sepal. The German word Schaetzchen (Schätzchen) is the diminutive form from Schatz, means treasure, but mostly used in the sense of darling. So, Schaetzchen means little darling.
