Lady Slipper Orchid Paphiopedilum Mike Roccaforte

18/05/2013

Paphiopedilum Mike Roccaforte is a terrestrial growing (ground orchid) Lady Slipper orchid hybrid, a crossing between Paphiopedilum rothschildianum (seed parent) and Paphiopedilum Greyi (pollen parent).

The orchid hybrid, developed by Mike Roccaforte has been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society by S.Roccaforte in the year 1979. Flowers get a size of about 10 cm width and 8 cm length.
To understand this beauty a bit more, let`s have a closer look to the parentage. The seed parent Paphiopedilum rothschildianum, often called King of the Paphs., is counted amongst the multifloral Phaps. and considered as an easy to care plant, but very difficult to bring to flower. The pollen parent Paphiopedilum Greyi is a primary hybrid, a crossing between the species orchids Paphiopedilum godefroyae and Paphiopedilum niveum. Both parents belong to the Brachypetalum group, which is considered as difficult to care, but easy to bring to flower.

The hybrid Paphiopedilum Mike Roccaforte requires warm - hot temperatures, bright light and balanced waterings. The, without any doubt, very beautiful, oriental orchid hybrid is a real task for an experienced and passionated orchid enthusiast and can`t be recommended for orchid beginners. All Paphiopedilum Mike Roccaforte orchids, which we found in trade, been very expensive. Prices of about 150 US$ for an orchid even topped the prices for Paphiopedilum rothschildianum species orchids.
