Lady Slipper Orchid Paphiopedilum Doitung Emerald

04/09/2012

Paphiopedilum Doitung Emerald is a Thai Lady Slipper Orchid hybrid, a crossing between the hybrids Paphiopedilum Vert (seed parent) and Paphiopedilum Maudiae (pollen parent).

The stunning bright green Paphiopedilum Doitung Emerald has been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society by the Mae Fah Luang Foundation (Chiang Rai province, North Thailand) in the year 2012. Mae Fah Luang (Royal Mother from the Sky) is the title given by the hill tribe people to Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra (1900 – 1995), the Princess Mother of the King of Thailand, His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great. Since the late 1960s, Mae Fah Luang campaigned indefatigably to improve the dire living conditions of rural Thai people, especially of the hill tribes in remote mountainous areas in North Thailand. Princess Srinagarindra founded the non-profit organization Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage (MFLF) in 1972 at the Doi Tung area, near Chiang Rai, North Thailand.

In the same year the Mae Fah Luang Garden, a botanical garden for temperate flowers, has been established and has become an important destination for Tourists and Thai people as well. The garden has been built on the land of the Akha village of Pa Kluay, which was an important route for opium, heroin and weapon trafficking at this time. The Akha villagers agreed to be relocated to a new site 500 meters away, which got running water, electricity and a road to the village.
Flowers of the terrestrially growing Lady Slipper Orchid Paphiopedilum Doitung Emerald get a size of about 12 cm. Flowering period: Summer - Autumn.
