The orchid genus Vanda has been established by the British botanist Robert Brown in the year 1820. The name Vanda goes back to the Sanskrit name for the Vanda species Vanda tessellata and was primarily used by the British Indologist William Jones in 1795.
Vanda orchids are mostly epiphytic, just a very few grows terrestrialy or lithophytic. Vanda orchids are native to India, the Himalayas, Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, and North Australia. Many wild Vanda species, especially the “blue” Vanda coerulea are endangered,
because of their habitat destruction.
