Tree Jasmine (Radermachera ignea)

The tree jasmine, Radermachera ignea (Kurz) Steenis 1976, is a sub-tropical, deciduous tree, native to North Thailand, North Laos and the North of Myanmar (formerly Burma).

In our home country Thailand, the tree jasmine is called Kasalong Kham or Peep Thong and is the provincial tree of the Chiang Rai province, the northernmost province of Thailand. The imposing tree, belongs to the Trumpet Creeper family (Bignoniaceae) and can reach heights up to 20 meters, under good conditions up to about 40 meters. The striking orange flowers grow straight out of the trunk and branches. Before the tree jasmine starts to flower in January until August, it drops most of its leaves. Flowers, which get a length of about 9 - 10 cm, are fragrant with a scent reminescent of jasmine. The genus Radermachera has been named in 1855 by the Swiss botanists Heinrich Zollinger (1818-1859) and Moritzi Alexander (1806-1850) in honour to the Dutch botanist Jacob Cornelis Matthieu Radermacher (1741-1783).
