It was quite a task to identify this cute orchid as Howeara Lava burst. As we found the Howeara Lava Burst in our friends and supporters Orchid Shop, Phrao Orchids, in Chiang Mai, North Thailand, Kathai, a young Thai girl with a big knowledge about orchids gave us the crucial hint. It`s a Rodriguezia, she said, but for sure a hybrid. So we started our research and viewed hundreds of images until we found the name. What is a Howeara ? We never heard that name before. To cut a long story short, Howeara (Hwra.) is the nothogenus for intergeneric orchid hybrids, crossings from the orchid genera Leochilus, Oncidium and Rodriguezia. Howeara Lava burst is a crossing between
Howeara Mini-Primi and Rodriguezia secunda.

The small plant is best potted with coconut husks and reach a size up to 25 cm. Inflorescences get a size up to about 20 cm with long-lasting flowers. When grown correctly, Howeara Lava Burst blooms several times a year, flowers get a size of about 2,5 cm. Don´t cut the inflorescences, until they completely dried out, as they can sprout blooms a second time.
