Orchid Hybrid Oncidium Pupukea Sunset

08/04/2013

Oncidium Pupukea Sunset (synonym: Miltonidium Pupukea Sunset) is an epiphytic growing, primary orchid hybrid, a crossing between the species orchids Oncidium fuscatum (seed parent) and Oncidium cheirophorum (Pollen parent).

Oncidium Pupukea Sunset has been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society by R.DeMoss in the year 1989. We´ve been a bit confused why this colorful orchid hybrid is often named Miltonidium Pupukea Sunset and found out, that the seed parent Oncidium fuscatum Rchb. f. 1863 was formerly named Miltonia warscewiczii Rchb. f. 1856. The long-lasting flowers get a size of about 2 cm. Inflorescences carry up to about 20 flowers. Oncidium Pupukea Sunset requires cool to warm temperatures and medium to bright light. The orchid hybrid is considered as easy to care and can be recommended for orchid beginners. The name Pupukea Sunset refers to the Hawaiian community Pupukea with its famous Sunset Beach.
