Thai Miniature Orchid Stereochilus erinaceus

04/06/2012

Stereochilus erinaceus (Rchb. f.) Garay 1972 is an epiphytic growing Thai miniature orchid species, found in Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Thailand.

Characteristic for this Thai miniature orchid are the short hairs outside on the petals of the very small flowers. As Stereochilus erinaceus flowers get a size of just about 0,8 cm, they are best viewed with a magnifying glass or a macro lens. Flowering period: June.
The cute miniature orchid requires a warm to hot, humid climate. Stereochilus erinaceus orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival).
