Aerides flabellata Rolfe ex Downie 1925

02/05/2010

The image of the Aerides flabellata Rolfe ex Downie 1925 looks more like a creature from the ghost train than an orchid. It seems like our young flower photographer Kitisak “Nat” Jaidee has a soft spot to let orchids look scary or ghostly.

Aerides flabellata Rolfe ex Downie 1925 is an epiphytic growing orchid species, native to Thailand, Myanmar (formerly Burma) and South China (Yunnan). The highly fragrant flowers reach a size of about 2,5 cm. The 15 - 20 cm long inflorescense is sprouting up to 20 flowers. Flowering period: April - May. Aerides flabellata requires a warm temperature and bright light or full sunlight. The tropical orchid is best cultivated mounted on wood or in hanging baskets with a well-drained potting medium.
