Lady Slipper Orchid Paphiopedilum callosum

30/05/2012

As we found the Lady Slipper Orchid Paphiopedilum callosum (Rchb. f.) Pfitzer 1895 at an orchid exhibition in our hometown Chiang Mai, North Thailand, the orchid was labeled as Paphiopedilum thailandense Fowlie, which isn`t an accepted name.

The terrestrial or lithophytic growing lady slipper orchid is a variety of Phapiopedilum callosum found in South Thailand and sometimes it`s called Paphiopedilum callosum var. thailandense, which is also not accepted. Paphiopedilum callosum lady slipper orchids are native to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The single flowered, purple colored inflorescences can reach length up to 25 cm. Flowers get a size of about 10 cm. Flowering period: March - May. Paphiopedilum callosum orchids are protected by CITES Appendix I (threatened with extinction, trade only in exceptional circumstances).
The tropical lady slipper orchid requires intermediate temperatures and moderate bright light.
