Dendrobium alexandrae Schltr. 1912

05/05/2010

In the early days of his last expedition the German botanist Rudollf Schlechter met Alexandra Sobennikoff, the daughter of a russian tea trader and named the spectacular Dendrobium alexandrae Schltr. 1912 orchid in honour to her. After the end of the journey Rudollf Schlechter and Alexandra Sobennikoff got married.

The beautiful, epiphytic Dendrobium alexandrae is native to Papua New Guinea and New Guinea. The long-lasting flowers of this Dendrobium orchid beauty reach a size of about 5 - 8 cm.
About the flowering period we´re not sure, while in nature it seems that the plant is blooming in summer and fall, while cultivated the Dendrobium alexandrae is flowering all around the year.
