13/01/2010

The epiphytic growing Rhynchostylis gigantea (Lindl.) Ridl. 1896 orchid has been first described by the English botanist John Lindley as Vanda gigantea Lindl. 1833, which is the basionym. The beautiful and highly fragant Rhynchostylis gigantea, commonly called The Giant Rhynchostylis or Foxtail Orchid is endemic to Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines. The inflorescences reach lengths up to 40 cm and sprout up to 50 flowers. Size of the flowers: 2,5 cm. Flowering period: December - February. Rhynchostylis gigantea orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). The tropical orchid requires warm temperatures and moderate sunlight. Foxtail orchids are best cultivated in hanging baskets or mounted on wood.
