Phalaenopsis Taida Super Jewel

03/03/2010

Phalaenopsis Taida Super Jewel is an epiphytic growing orchid hybrid, a cross breeding between the hybrids Phalaenopsis Super Seven (seed parent) and Phalaenopsis Hwafeng Redjewel (pollen parent).

Phalaenopsis Taida Super Jewel has been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in the year 2001 by Taida Orchids, an orchid nursery in Bridgewater, a township in Somerset County, New Jersey, USA. The stunning flowers get a size of about 8 cm in diameter. We found this beautiful orchid hybrid at an orchid competition in Chiang Mai, North Thailand and couldn´t resist to take a few pictures.

Orchids are truly beautiful flowers. Fortunately they can grow in pretty much any habitat although they are usually found in the tropics like Asia, South America and Central America. Surprisingly though they are also found in the Arctic circle. There are many, many species of them but they really stand out from other plants because they share some very evident apomorphies.

The flowers of these orchids really are something else and have such an incredible beauty, in particular those in hybrid orchids. If you ever come across one, perhaps in an excellent hotel or a fancy casino where they play poker games, then you will see what I mean. You too will be desperately reaching for your camera to get a picture of this remarkable flower.
