Paphiopedilum Orchids

The Paphiopedilum Orchidaceae genus has been established in the year 1886 by the German botanist Ernst Hugo Heinrich Pfitzer. In common parlance Paphiopedilum orchids are called Lady Slipper or Venus Slipper . The name Paphiopedilum refers to Paphia, another name for Aphrodite, the greece goddess of love and pedilon, slipper. At the present time there are about 100 Paphiopedilum species known, native to India, Nepal, Burma (Myanmar), China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and New Guinea. The abbreviation in horticultural trade is: Paph.
