Butterfly Orchid Psychopsis Mariposa var.alba

14/12/2012

Psychopsis Mariposa var.alba is an albino butterfly orchid hybrid, a crossing between the species orchid Psychopsis papilio (seed parent) and the hybrid Psychopsis Kalihi (pollen parent).

Psychopsis Mariposa has been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in the year 1972 by Ruben in Orchids, an orchid nursery in Goulds, Florida, USA. Flowers of the tropical orchid hybrid get a size of up to about 15-20 cm. Flowering period: Winter - Summer. Psychopsis butterfly orchids, and so Psychopsis Mariposa var.alba as well, require a warm to hot, humid climate and a good air movement to avoid root rot. Plants should kept humid during the growth season from spring until autumn, whilst water and fertilizer should be restricted during winter. The orchid need a lot of light, but no full sun to induce blooming. Never cut not completely dried out inflorescences away, as they may set flowers again for 5-10 years.
Psychopsis butterfly orchids can`t be recommended for orchid beginners.
