Passionflowers rank among the most beautiful flowers in the plant kingdom. The red passionflower Passiflora miniata Vanderpl. 2006, commonly called red Granadilla or Scarlet flower, is, at least for me, the most splendid passionflower I ever saw. Erroneously this tropical beauty, native to South America, got the botanical name Passiflora coccinea Aubl., which has found to be a different species. In 2006 John Vanderplank, the leading independent researcher on the genus Passiflora, correctly described and published the new name Passiflora miniata. The Red Granadilla is a fast-growing, vigorous, tropical climber and can reach a length up to about 6 meters. The fascinating flowers get a size up to about 10 cm in diameter, the fruits are edible. In a tropical environment Passiflora miniata blooms throughout the year.
