White Rhynchostylis gigantea

01/04/2012

The white Rhynchostylis gigantea, often called Rhynchostylis gigantea f. harrisoniana (Hook.) M.Wolff & O.Gruss 2007 or Rhynchostylis gigantea var alba, is correctly named Rhynchostylis gigantea subsp. gigantea. As Rhynchostylis gigantea f. harrisoniana is accepted as a synonym, Rhynchostylis gigantea var alba is not accepted by the science of botany. The white, epiphytic growing Rhynchostylis gigantea, with its highly fragrant flowers is native to North Thailand and upper North East Thailand. The length of inflorescences of mature Rhynchostylis gigantea orchids can reach about 30 cm and are packed with up to 50 scented flowers. Flowers reach a size of about 2,5 cm. Flowering period: January.
Other Rhynchostylis gigantea color variants:
Rhynchostylis gigantea Lindl.Ridl. 1896
Rhynchostylis gigantea var. rubrum Sagarik
