Paphiopedilum thaianum Iamwir. 2006

29/05/2013

Paphiopedilum thaianum Iamwir. 2006 is a terrestrial growing miniature lady slipper orchid species, native to the South of Thailand.

This very rare and endangered in the wild Paphiopedilum species has recently (2006) been discovered in the Phang Nga province, North of the holiday destination Phuket. It`s still questioned whether Paphiopedilum thaianum is an own species or a variation of Paphiopedilum niveum. The cute white flowers get a size of just about 4 cm in diameter and are born on single flowered inflorescences, which can reach lengths up to about 17 cm. Flowering period: Spring - Summer. Paphiopedilum thaianum belongs to the Brachypetalum group. Orchids from that group are known as very difficult to care, but easy to bring to flower. Prominent members of the Brachypetalum group are Paphiopedilum bellatulum, Paphiopedilum concolor, Paphiopedilum godefroyae and Paphiopedilum niveum.

The tropical miniature orchid requires an intermediate - warm, humid climate, bright light, but not too much direct sun and a very balanced watering (avoid waterlogging). During the winter rest waterings should be restricted to induce flowering. As Paphiopedilum thaianum is considered as very difficult to cultivate, it can`t be recommended for orchid beginners.
