Rhynchostylis coelestis (Rchb. f.) Rchb. f. ex Veitch 1891 is an epiphytic growing orchid species with blue or purple colored flowers, native to Thailand, where it`s called Khao Kae, Cambodia and Vietnam. As most Rhynchostylis orchids are highly fragrant with a scent reminescent of jasmine, hyacint and lilac, the smell of the Thai orchid Rhynchostylis coelestis is reckoned as unpleasant. The erect inflorescences grow up to a length of about 35 cm and carry up to about 50 long-lasting, waxy flowers. Single flowers get a size of about 2 cm. Flowering period: April – June. Rhynchostylis coelestis orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). This stunnig Thai orchid is deemed as an easy to care orchid, but requires a lot of light, a humidity above 50 % and should be regularly fertilized.
