Thai Orchid Trichoglottis seidenfadenii

01/07/2012

Trichoglottis seidenfadenii Aver. 1988 is a mid-sized, epiphytic growing Thai orchid species,
found in Thailand and Vietnam.

The Danish diplomat and botanist Gunnar Seidenfaden (1908-2001) named the Thai orchid as Trichoglottis tomentosa Seidenf. 1988, but the Russian botanist Leonid V. Averyanov (born 1955) changed the name in honour to Gunnar Seidenfaden in Trichoglottis seidenfadenii, which is the accepted name. To create a bit more confusion this beautiful Thai orchid is often labeled as Trichoglottis sagarikii in honour to the Thai orchid researcher Rapee Sakarik (born 1922), but this name is not accepted by the science of botany. In Thailand the beautiful orchid is called Suea Sakhrik, means Sakarik`s tiger. Flowers get a size of about 2,5 - 3 cm. Flowering period: April - June. Trichoglottis seidenfadenii orchids require a warm to hot humid climate and are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival).
