Ground Orchid Oeceoclades petiolata

30/04/2013

Oeceoclades petiolata (Schltr.) Garay & P. Taylor 1976 is a terrestrial growing (ground orchid), small sized orchid species, native to the dry forests in South Madagascar.

The erect inflorescences reach lengths of up to about 50 cm and carry up to 10 flowers. Flowers get a size of just about 1,5 cm in diameter. Flowering period: Spring - Summer. Oeceoclades petiolata orchids are protected by CITES Appendix II (trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival). The tropical ground orchid requires intermediate - warm temperatures and bright light. Due to their very few, thick roots, Oeceoclades petiolata orchids should be watered sparingly. During the short growth season from June to September waterings should be increased a bit. This beautiful ground orchid is just another testimony for the unique, but endangered biodiversity of Madagascar, the fourth-largest island in the world.
