Paphiopedilum concolor var. longipetalum

27/12/2013

Even if Paphiopedilum concolor var.longipetalum (Rolfe) O. Gruss & Iamwir.2006 looks quite different to Paphiopedilum concolor, it´s the same species and just classified as a variation (var.). Some sources claim, that the lady slipper orchid variety has been newly discovered in Thailand, but Paphiopedilum concolor var. longipetalum has been described primarly in the year 1896 by the British botanist Robert Allan Rolfe as Cypripedium concolor var. longipetalum Rolfe 1896. Flowers of the rare terrestrial growing lady slipper orchid get a size of about 5-6 cm with a width of about 12 cm.
Flowering period: May - September.

The lady slipper orchid requires warm temperatures, a location in partial shade to full shade and should be kept moderately humid. Paphiopedilum concolor orchids and so their variations, are protected by CITES Appendix I (threatened with extinction, trade only in exceptional circumstances).
